Overview of Ashanti Region

The Ashanti Region is located in south Ghana and is third largest of 16 administrative regions, occupying a total land surface of 24,389 km2 (9,417 sq mi) or 10.2 per cent of the total land area of Ghana. In terms of population, however, it is the most populated region with a population of 4,780,380 according to the 2011 census, accounting for 19.4% of Ghana’s total population. The Ashanti Region is known for its major gold bar and cocoa production. The largest city and regional capital is Kumasi. The Ashanti Region is the cultural heartbeat of Ghana. Land of the Golden Stool expressed in the language, passage rites, festivals, cuisine and ordinary day-to-day activities.

Accommodation, Food, Transportation and Other Costs

Accommodation – This tour will either be 3, 5 or more days. The drive to Kumasi from Accra is about a 5 hours drive, so everyone should pack atleast a carryon full of clothes and supplies to stay longer than 1 day. Also, since there is so much to do in Kumasi it is safe to say that we will also stay longer than 2 days. We will reserve a residence for all the days that we will be in the Ashanti Region. If you want to opt out of accommodations for this tour, Minus $75 per day from price.

Food – For all days in Kumasi we will have a hired chef cooking us breakfast and lunch similar to the full tour teams main accomodations in Accra. If you want to opt out of food, minus $40 per day from price.

Transportation – Depending on the amount of people we will arrange necessary transportation. It will be a air conditioned vehicle, from Accra to Kumasi with room for a small luggage and within Kumasi transportation should have enough room for a backpack or small bag. Minus $70 for Accra to Kumasi transportation or $40 per day on arraival from price, if you want to opt out of transportation.

Ntonso Village

Suggested destination carrying money – 250-500 CAD / 1000-2000 GHC. There will be specific regional items that you could purchase in the Ashanti Region that you would not be able to purchase anywhere else. Also, since Kumasi is a reasonable distance from Accra which is considered to be the tourist city, things are much cheaper in Kumasi. We recommend if your getting lots of gifts to get the majority of them in Kumasi. There will also be many events going on in 2019, celebrating the Year of Return.

Manhyia Palace Museum The Manhyia Palace Museum is a historical museum located in Kumasi, Ashanti, Ghana and situated within the Manhyia Palace. The Museum currently provides fair insight into the culture of Ashanti land and Ghana's cultural legacy from before its colonization by Great Britain. It primarily serves'to commemorate (the Ashanti people's) own kings, queens and leaders and to communicate the riches of their history and culture to future generations' and generally features video presentations and key historical items pertaining to Ashanti land and Ghana's ancestry.

The Prempeh II Jubilee Museum Among the displays are artifacts relating to the Ashanti king Prempeh II, including the king's war attire, ceremonial clothing, jewellery, protective amulets, personal equipment for bathing and dining, furniture, royal insignia and some fine brass weights for weighing gold. Constructed to resemble an Ashanti chief's house, it has a courtyard in front and walls adorned with traditional carved symbols.

Prempeh II Jubilee MuseumPrempeh II Jubilee Museum Museum The Armed Forces Museum located in Kumasi in the Asante Region is one of the very few Military Museums in Africa. In keeping with the mandate of Military Museums, it collects, collates and exhibits artifacts relating to the history of the Ghana Armed Forces. Since its inception in 1952, it has been an institution of learning primarily about the evolution and development of the Gold Coast Regiment of the Colonial era to the present Ghana Armed Forces.

Okomfo Anokye Sword Situated on the grounds of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Kumasi, is the Komfo Anokye Sword Site which is seminal in Asante history. A 333 year old sword wedged in the rockface is one of the the centre artefacts and legends of the rich history of the Asante nation. The history of the Asante people is eloquently told by the young curator. On a good day you may run into the Asante king who regularly comes to pay his respects at this important and sacred site.

Obuasi The Obuasi Gold Mine is an open-pit and underground gold mine situated near Obuasi, in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. It is one of the top-9 largest gold mines on Earth. The 'land' is customarily owned by the Asantehene King Osei Tutu II. The mine is in Obuasi Municipal District, 39 miles (59.4 kilometers) south-west of regional capital Kumasi.
